The island of Rhema, discovered around 1200 BIE, was a semi-tropical paradise where Melody, following the voice of the Great King of the Sea, led a band of adventurers to escape the wars and famine that plagued the mainland at that time. The adventurers and their descendants lived there and prospered for over a millennium thereafter.
Rhema joined the ranks of the kingdoms of Tyrizah in the year 618 BIE, when Melody declared herself its queen. Despite its small size, Rhema was a prominent economic and military power in the centuries preceding the rise of the Tethysian Empire.
In 57 IE, Rhema became an occupied state of the Tethysian Empire, with Melody's regime remaining intact. Around 104 IE, strange rumors of a Great Prince and the Return of the Kingdom of Marindel emerged from Rhema and troubled the Empire. After several failed attempts to silence the rumors, in 105 IE, the emperor sent his notorious Draco Fleet to raze the kingdom. Only a couple hundred people escaped, Melody among them.
Rhema is the only kingdom of Tyrizah that has been ruled by a single monarch for its entire existence. Melody is sometimes called the Immortal Queen for this reason.
Rhema has been lost and forgotten in the centuries following the fall of the Tethysian Empire. Some explorers claim the island is protected from rediscovery by a terrible curse, including a supersized dragon that devours all who sail there. However, some legends whisper of the imminent and sudden restoration of the kingdom of Rhema—a sign that will precede the end of the present era.
Most of the island's coastline consists of jagged cliffs and rocky bluffs, making it difficult to access by sea. The most notable exception is Carnelian Cove, a spacious harbor hemmed in by towering forested crags. As one might expect, Carnelian Cove was the kingdom of Rhema's epicenter of trade.
During its heyday mere centuries before the Imperial Era, merchants and travelers from across the realm sailed to Carnelian Cove to do business with the kingdom of Rhema. Even after the Imperial occupation, the Tethysians recognized the city's importance and did little to change it - besides imposing their own taxes, of course. Due to Carnelian Cove's location on the northeastern coast, and the near proximity of the mainland's desert region (modern-day Sunophsis), the Tethysian Empire frequently used the harbor to mobilize and launch several invasion fleets, featuring both ships and dragons. However, Carnelian Cove's usefulness came to an abrupt end in 105 IE with the destruction of the kingdom of Rhema.
Diamond City was the capital of the kingdom of Rhema, and boasted a population nearly double that of Carnelian Cove. A sprawling city of stone known for its beautiful elegant spires, Diamond City was designed by Melody herself shortly before she declared herself queen in 618 BIE. Melody lived in Diamond City for nearly 700 years thereafter, which is by far the longest time she has spent in a single location without traveling, teleporting, or being forcibly taken elsewhere. However, Melody infrequently interacted with her people, and surrounded herself with advisers and elders who were willing to do most of the politicking for her. This dynamic continued even into the Imperial Era, with Melody's officials often acting as intermediaries between their moody queen and the Tethysian governor.
Diamond City took the brunt of the Draco Fleet's attack in 105 IE, with even the stone spires being razed and demolished. Though Melody survived the destruction, she was left alone to weep amongst the blazing ruins.
This desolate rocky bluff rose to notoriety throughout the kingdom when the occupying Tethysians learned of a local sea monster, called Nex, and sought to harness its legendary reputation to their advantage. In no time at all, they trained the monster to come to Point Nex at the sound of a gong by providing it with a prisoner to devour. Because Nex's eating process included tenderizing its victims with flesh-dissolving acid, the Tethysian Empire's executions at Point Nex were considered to be the highest form of capital punishment.
Notably, during an execution in 104 IE, another monster appeared in Nex's stead. There were rumors alluding to its gigantic serpentine form, loud booming voice, and an entourage of undead lukúba. Some claimed that the monster came for the specific victim, a man who claimed to be the Great Prince of the Sea. However, all rumors were laid to rest when the kingdom of Rhema was destroyed in 105 IE... or, so the emperor thought.
Curiously, Nex's fate remains unknown.
